Is it really bad air in here?

Why does indoor air quality cause so much concern? Describesremo the importance of pollution in confined spaces and demonstratesremo, through a short experiment, how we can improve indoor air quality in the presence of a polluting source.

Circular economy

Circular economy

The circular economy currently represents a valid alternative to the linear economy which has resulted in an unsustainable level of exploitation of natural resources and enormous environmental impacts. The circular economy is a model of regenerative production and consumption, aimed at extending the life cycle of products to favor the reduction of waste and a more sustainable exploitation of natural resources and raw materials.

Stories of Circular Economy - CNR

Fabio Trincardi, the director of the Department of Earth System Sciences and Technologies for the Environment of the CNR (CNR-DSSTA), describes on la 7 the ideas born within the RINASCE, RECEPIT and PLASMARE projects to move from the linear economy to circular economy with a view to reducing and re-using waste.

REBORN - The revenge of the butt

Cigarette filters are a type of waste that significantly contributes to the formation of microplastics in the environment. Their interior is made up of a polymeric material, cellulose acetate. In the RINASCE project, a method and prototype was developed to recycle cigarette filters, resulting in a clean polymer that can be reused.

Shaping

Shaping

The final video of the PLASMARE project - Plastics for new materials through an eco-sustainable recycling - describes the management of hard plastics and the eco-sustainable recycling potential of some parts. The project, financed by the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea, was born from the collaboration of the CNR-ISMN, the CNR-IIA and the company Esper srl.

The colors of the desert, from the Sahara to the atmospheric observatory of Monte Curcio

The measurements of particulate matter available at the atmospheric observatory of Monte Curcio, in the Sila plateau, have recently shown an important incidence, both in frequency and magnitude, of events associated with the transport of Saharan sand.
What causes this phenomenon and what implications does it entail?
Mariantonia Bencardino, Antonella Tassone and Valentino Mannarino together with the other colleagues involved in the management of the observation infrastructure of Monte Curcio, of the Rende (Cs) headquarters of the CNR IIA, in collaboration with the CNR-4 Elements project, with the Rivista Rinnovabili.it and with the IIA Divulgazione Working Group.

What role for biofuels in the ecological transition

Patrizio Tratzi and Valerio Paolini of CNR-IIA, address the issue of the role of biofuels in the ecological transition. For the decarbonisation of heavy transport, biofuels will play a key role, especially in the first phase. In Europe, currently the most mature technologies are mainly related to biodiesel and biomethane.

There is no more snow for the Olympic Games: Beijing tries to change the climate

The considerations of the Chief Researcher of the CNR-IIA Antonello Pasini on la Repubblica regarding the critical situation for winter sports, due to climate change, so much so that in the future the Olympics may no longer take place in many locations where they took place in the past. Furthermore, the data on the increase in snow altitude, notes on the water balance and artificial snow are analyzed.

ScienzEstate2022 - "50 shades of snow"

Roberto Salzano and Lorenzo Bigagli, researchers of the CNR IIA - Institute on Atmospheric Pollution, took part in the ScienzEstate2022 event with “180 seconds of Science”. Roberto was ranked third for the topic dealt with "50 shades of snow" in which he presented the activities carried out within the PNRA on the study of the evolution processes of snow coverings in polar areas. The researchers tried their hand at presenting their activities in 3 minutes, having only one object available.

IIA: History & results

ANNIVERSARY – IIA: 55 YEARS OF RESEARCH

To celebrate the 55th anniversary, the CNR Institute on Air Pollution organized an event entitled "IIA: 30 years for research" on 2023 October 55, in the Sala Marconi of the Institution's Headquarters.
During the day, after the institutional greetings, the author, writer and screenwriter Luca Manzi performed in an artistic-musical performance on the theme "The sacredness of air and nature through the glories of the past", accompanied by jazz music.

Subsequently, directors, researchers and technicians retraced the history of the Institute which, founded in 1968 by Prof. Arnaldo Liberti, has as its main objective the development of innovative methods and technologies for determining the concentrations of pollutants present in the atmosphere.

Finally, the photobook and 15 digital panels were presented, specifically developed for the event thanks to the collaboration and contribution provided by many colleagues. Both works retrace the main stages reached and the results achieved by the Institute in 55 years of research activity. The posters were installed in the "Digital Corridor" of the CNR where it was possible to enjoy the reconstruction of the long and interesting activity of the IIA in a highly effective context!

PANELS – PHOTO BOOK

The digital panels and the photographic book arise from the activity that the Institute on Air Pollution has carried out over the last 55 years and describe, in thematic and temporal contexts, the main scientific stages.

We thank our colleagues who, with their precious contributions, the result of their work and passion, made the realization of these works possible. Special thanks to those who externally provided important support to their creation and, with their competence and enthusiasm, contributed to the growth of the Institute.
