The European Green Deal, the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the IMO's initial strategy on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships and the Mannheim Ministerial Declaration of the CCNR represent today key political developments that provide clear ambitions towards road transport. sea with zero emissions. The vision is to develop and demonstrate low-emission solutions for all major ship classes and associated shipping services by 2030, in turn enabling shipping companies to implement strategies to achieve zero waterborne transport. emissions by 2050. Continued progress towards “zero-emission shipping” also has an impact on the EC's objectives to tackle climate change, air pollution from ships and deterioration of waters and oceans.

To address the challenges and shortcomings described in the previous sections, CNR-IIA is a partner of the DT4GS project  (Digital Twin for Green Shipping) funded under the call HORIZON-CL5-2021-D5-01 which will provide an “Open Digital Twin Framework” for both shipping companies and broader marine industry players to take advantage of the new opportunities made available through the use of Digital Twins. The project will enable shipping stakeholders to actively embrace the full spectrum of DT innovations to support smart green shipping in both upgrading existing ships and building new ships. DT4GS will cover the entire lifecycle of the ship, from planning to design, construction, operation, retrofitting and decommissioning, embracing the federation of DT applications and using the DTLF (Digital Transport & Logistics Forum) policies and related shared data space developments for the sector. DT4GS applications will focus on shipping companies, but will also provide industrial decarbonisation decision support system for shipyards, equipment manufacturers, port authorities and operators, river commissions, classification societies, energy companies and infrastructure companies of transport / corridor. "

The project will involve specialized partners from Italy, Belgium, France, Ireland, Cyprus, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Greece.
