The new one has been published 'Sustainable Islands 2021' Report, study conducted by the Institute on Air Pollution of the National Research Council (Cnr-Iia) and Legambiente on the path towards sustainability of 27 inhabited smaller Italian islands, which this year, in addition to presenting numbers and data, is enriched by the story of the sustainable initiatives in progress and those already activated in recent years in the island realities analyzed.

The Report takes into consideration the areas of energy, the circular economy, mobility and sustainable tourism, analyzing, with numbers, data and specific data sheets, the situation of 27 smaller inhabited islands which, divided by region, are: for the Campania - Capri, Ischia, Procida; for the Toscana - Capraia, Giglio Island, Giannutri, Gorgona, Elba Island; for the Lazio - Ponza, Ventotene; for the Puglia - Tremiti Islands; for the Sicilia - Egadi Islands and Aeolian Islands; for the Sardinia - Sant'Antioco, San Pietro, Maddalena.

The Report highlights, among other things, that for theenergy supply, only 7 out of 27 are the islands interconnected to the national electricity grid, even though solar photovoltaics are growing thanks to state incentives; in water sector, the lack of drinking water forces some islands to be refueled by tankers, while, on the purification front, almost 40% of the islands analyzed do not have a waste water treatment system; the capacity to grow almost everywhere separate waste while the situation in terms of mobility.

The 2021 edition of 'Sustainable Islands' presents a further focus on good practices for sustainable development already underway in Italy and in the world. Among the international ones, for example, the proposal to eliminate the import of single-use plastic in the Maldives, which aim to become plastic-free by 2023, while in Italy four new sweepers are at work with the task of keeping the waters around Ischia, Procida and the other Phlegraean islands.
