Area coordinator: Maria Patrizia Adamo
It carries out research and technological development activities in the field of satellite Earth observation technologies within the international community GEO (Group on Earth Observations).
The scientific activity of the IIA research group based in Bari is part of the thematic area of Earth Observation (OT) of the Institute, within the wider international community constituted by the Group on Earth Observations Committee on Earth Observation Satellite (GEO).
GEO aims to provide useful monitoring tools for the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of ecosystems through Earth observation data. The tools include indices and variables essential for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystems, which make it possible to move from the original Earth observation data to knowledge through value-added services.
This is in order to contribute: 1) to the Convention on Biodiversity, signed in 1992 during the United Nations conference on the environment and development (the "Earth Summit" in Rio); 2) the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; 3) the Paris climate agreements); 4) the Sendai agreement to reduce the risk of disasters.
