Module 1 - Concepts and processes underlying air pollution (4 hours)

  • Troposphere importance of atmospheric physics and meteorology for the dispersion of pollutants (mixing, thermal inversions, etc.)
  • Gaseous inorganic pollutants (CO, SO2, NOx: chemical-physical properties, effects on humans and ecosystems, emission sources)

Module 2 - Characteristics, composition and monitoring of atmospheric particulate matter (6 hours)

  • Atmospheric particulate matter (Introduction: natural / anthropic, primary / secondary, aerodynamic diameter and particle size distribution)
  • Atmospheric particulate matter (Chemical composition: anions, black / white / brown carbon, cations and heavy metals)
  • Atmospheric particulate matter (Focus on secondary particulate matter: role of SO2, NOx and NH3 in the different particle size fractions, organic secondary PM)
  • Sampling and gravimetric determination of atmospheric particulate
  • Chemical analysis of atmospheric particulate
  • Source identification: Source apportionment

Module 3 - Organic pollutants in the atmosphere (4 hours)

  • Organic micropollutants: chemical-physical properties, emission sources, gas / particulate distribution, environmental fate; tracers and diagnostic reports of specific sources (biomass combustion, transport, etc.)
  • Sampling and analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: instrumentation, methodologies, artefacts, use of data for source analysis.
  • Notes on the laboratory analysis of organic pollutants: extraction, purification and GC / MS analysis
  • Volatile organic compounds: properties, analytical methods of sampling and analysis, use of data for source analysis.

Module 4 - Online monitoring of pollutants (4 hours)

  • Operating principles of CO, SO2, NOx, NMHC analyzers
  • Atmospheric particulate monitoring

Module 5 - Asbestos (2 hours)

  • Properties of asbestos and general framework of the problem
  • Sampling and analysis methods
