Abstract of the project

The Arctic is the region of the planet that more than any other is affected by global warming and associated climate change. Arctic PASSION aims to respond to the urgent need for coordinated and accessible Earth observation and information services for the Arctic region. Despite significant international efforts in the past, the elements of the current pan-Arctic observation network remain fragmented and disconnected, or have other critical issues. The aim of the project is to overcome these pain points and move towards a fully integrated pan-Arctic Observing System of Systems (pan-AOSS). In doing so, observations and models will be integrated to provide a more detailed view of the current situation and future scenarios, as well as to enable those living in the Arctic to respond effectively to the challenges of global change.

The activities and methodologies to achieve the objectives specified below are the most varied: from the analysis and use of satellite data, to that of in situ data, up to the most advanced modeling, which makes use of all available data, with particular reference to those of Copernicus for all terrestrial, marine, cryospheric and atmospheric matrices. From the point of view of data analysis and modeling, particular importance is given to the development and use of artificial intelligence methods.
Arctic PASSION's overall goal is to respond to the growing scientific and social challenges of global change in the Arctic through the creation of an Arctic Observing System of Systems. A system that allows quick access to interoperable data and that allows informed and effective decision-making activities, with particular emphasis on actions that allow sustainable development.

In this framework, the specific objectives are the following:

O1 - Enhance and integrate Arctic Observations (WP1);

O2 - Improve Arctic Data Management (WP2);

O3 - Optimize Arctic Observing Networks through Modeling Techniques (WP3);

O4 - Deliver New EuroGeo Pilot Services (WP4);

O5 - Quantify the Societal and Economic Benefit of the pan-AOSS (WP5);

O6 - Enhance International Collaboration and Clustering (WP6);

O7 - Provide Decision Making and Policy Support (WP7);

O8 - Co-develop an integrated pan-AOSS and Upgrade an Arctic-GEOSS in GEO (WP8);

O9 - Link Arctic Observations and Society (WP9).
