Abstract of the project

Marine research plays a crucial role in a wider effort to preserve and support the sustainability of the oceans. Innovative technology such as the Blue Cloud offers us unique opportunities to understand, exploit and protect the ocean environment. The rise of the 'blue economy' concept must be accompanied by new technological applications for more effective marine research that supports efforts to minimize environmental risks and ecological disasters. The EU-funded Blue Cloud project proposes a practical approach to understanding the potential that cloud-based open science offers to ocean research. The project will develop a pilot cybernetic platform to collect and process multidisciplinary data and provide analytical tools and computational structures.

Coordinated by a highly experienced SME in the ICT sector, with over 15 years of experience and technically coordinated by a marine and ocean data specialist, the project addresses the potential of cloud-based open science with a hands-on approach to achieve a range of services that identify the long-term challenges to build a “Blue Cloud” that is a thematic EOSC cloud to support research that wants to better understand and manage the many aspects of ocean sustainability, through a series of five pilot descriptors.

The BLUE CLOUD project is implemented by 17 experienced partners, drawn from academia, research and industry, with strategic and practical involvement in the design and delivery of blue community needs. An influential committee of external experts and a group of forecasting experts support the project, which will also carry out 4 events and workshops focused on the Roadmap, 1 hackathon, 10 webinars, 1 conference on final results.
The project seeks to capitalize on what already exists and to develop and distribute, through a pragmatic work plan, the pilot "Blue Cloud", an IT platform that brings together and provides access to: 1) multidisciplinary data obtained from observations and models , 2) analytical tools and 3) essential IT structures for key ocean science cases.

Expected results include:

a Blue Cloud Framework, Data Discovery & Access Service (about 400 users) and VRE (about 1.000 users) from 25 countries, a catalog of Blue Cloud services that includes over 50 services distributed through 5 pilot demonstrations;
a roadmap to 2030 for the implementation of the Blue Cloud;
A Whitepaper on the results of the Food / Blue-Cloud Pilot to support the implementation of thematic EOSCs;
the involvement of the community of stakeholders, led by a consortium that brings together the main European infrastructures for the management of marine data, the EOSC horizontal electronic infrastructures and excellent marine researchers.
