Abstract of the project

The EU and China signed a 'Blue Partnership for the Ocean' agreement in 2018, marking the start of a new phase in EU-China strategic ocean relations. One of the main results of this partnership is EMOD-PACE (EMODnet PArtnership for China and Europe), a collaborative project focusing on marine knowledge exchange and diplomacy supported by the Partnership Instrument (PI) of the EC.

EMOD-PACE promotes international ocean governance and supports the implementation of global commitments of the EU and China by facilitating the sharing of marine observation data and expert knowledge, developing new information products and establishing a close working relationship between the National Marine Data and Information Service of China (NMDIS) and the European Marine Data and Observation Network (EMODnet).

The CNR-IIA activity has implemented the interoperability between the European Central Portal of EMODnet and the web services for data sharing made available by the National Marine Data and Information Service of China (NMDIS), in order to make it more easily accessible Chinese marine data from European users.
CNR-IIA has employed and advanced the Discovery and Access Broker (DAB) technology to achieve the project objectives, among which:
• analyze the service interfaces, and data models and metadata made available by the Chinese services and requested by the EMODnet portal
• design and develop accessor and profiler software components to be integrated into the DAB framework for the mediation of the service interfaces identified in the previous point
• production of an instance of the DAB system including the components developed in point II which creates interoperability between the EMODnet Central Portal and the NMDIS web services
Among the objectives of EMOD-PACE are:
• Facilitate bilingual access to data and products currently available in the European and Chinese marine data portals (EMODnet and NMDIS), as well as those developed during the project.
• Create interoperable maritime data information systems between the EU and China.
• Develop an intermediary service for access to data and products available between EMODnet and NMDIS.
• Examine the similarities and differences between European and Chinese ocean circulation models and reanalysis products.
• Compare the European and Chinese numerical models used for seabed habitats and ecological carrying capacity by analyzing the applicability of the respective models in different areas.
• Provide data and information products for 'Maritime Silk Road' seas on sea level changes, coastal erosion, wetland degradation and vessel traffic density.
