Abstract of the project

EMODnet Ingestion is part of a further development of the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), an initiative of the European Commission (DG MARE) part of the 2020 strategy for Marine Knowledge. A partnership of over 20 European organizations collaborates in EMODnet by assembling marine data from different sources and making them usable through seven thematic portals.
However, for many reasons, a large amount of data acquired by public bodies, researchers and private companies do not reach the EMODnet portals or other public databases and are therefore not available. Potential users sometimes resort to less accurate data sources or are forced to repeat observations, encountering obvious obstacles.
EMODnet Ingestion aims to facilitate the publication and distribution of data that would not otherwise be available, by involving potential suppliers and employing technologies to facilitate sharing.

CNR-IIA contributes above all to the objective of facilitating machine-to-machine data transfers and thus enabling the sharing (download) of near real time data from heterogeneous data sources.
Discovery and Access Broker (DAB) technology is used to put into production a brokerage service dedicated to EMODnet Ingestion, capable of facilitating the harmonization and sharing of data from heterogeneous sources with the EMODnet Physics portal, which represents a point of access to discover and obtain the near real time data of EMODnet.
Among the potential sources that can contribute to EMODnet by exploiting the DAB technology, some national and regional hydrological services have been identified which acquire observations of interest also for the marine community (in particular water flow rate and water quality data collected at the estuary of rivers ).
Among the objectives of EMODnet Ingestion are:
• Maintain and further develop the EMODnet web portal for data ingestion.
• Implement operational procedures to convey data to the final repositories. The project does not aim to establish a new permanent data repository as existing ones will be used. Data can only be handed over to the final archives on condition that they are made freely available and open access to the data is guaranteed.
• Facilitate machine-to-machine data transfers. To facilitate faster data availability (near real time), direct connections to observation tools can be established without the data necessarily passing through the data ingestion portal.
• Manage a user support service to provide your data in the most appropriate format.
• Allow data providers to track the progress of publishing their data from submission on the ingestion portal to archiving in a repository.
• Participate in discussions with EMODnet partners in order to improve the efficiency of the entire collection, assembly and dissemination process.
• Maintain a summary record of the data provided.
• Engage in outreach activities to significant marine data holders whose data is not already available. A strategy must be proposed to identify and target relevant marine data holders who are not yet connected to existing data management infrastructures. This should include an approach to engaging different audiences and stakeholders.
• Improve and document the availability of data from licensed activities (eg aquaculture and offshore power generation), promote the use of common standards, and start a path towards a more harmonized approach, through a workshop.
