Abstract of the project

Earth and environmental sciences require large amounts of data from satellite observations, in situ, models, omics data… The domains of the Earth system are interconnected and although the interfaces between domains are important for many studies with large impacts on society, such as climate change, agriculture and food, human safety and health, the current digital architecture is essentially based on distributed and domain-dependent data stores, causing difficulties for the integrated use of all environmental data.
The objective of FAIR-EASE is to customize and manage distributed and integrated services for observation and modeling of the Earth system, environment and biodiversity by improving the TRL of their components in close cooperation with user communities, the European Open Science Cloud and research infrastructures.

CNR-IIA will mainly contribute to Work Package 2 dedicated to:
• develop and operate the FAIR-EASE service for the discovery and access of interdisciplinary data from different data infrastructures
• develop and integrate the FAIR-EASE service for interdisciplinary semantic brokerage
CNR-IIA will contribute to FAIR-EASE by providing, operating and advancing the Discovery and Access Broker (DAB) technology, which implements a brokerage approach to discover and access in a harmonized way multidisciplinary data shared online through heterogeneous web services.
In particular, CNR-IIA will contribute to the analysis of the data sources identified by the use cases (Work Package 5), and to the subsequent implementation of their connection with the FAIR-EASE service for data discovery and access. Multidisciplinary data can also be discovered using terms from disciplinary vocabularies, thanks to the semantic brokerage approach implemented by DAB technology.
CNR-IIA will also contribute to Work Package 4 by providing input to the Data Lake component architecture.
The project will achieve:
• the FAIR-EASE data discovery and access service to provide users with an easy and FAIR tool for discovery and access to multidisciplinary datasets and environmental aggregates managed by European data infrastructures
• an Earth Analytical Lab, with EOSC connectivity that will support analysis and processing remota of heterogeneous data facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration
• multidisciplinary use cases to contribute to the requirements of FAIR-EASE components and demonstrate its capabilities to support open science.
