Abstract of the project
The Regions of Convergence
The “Convergence” objective concerns the Member States and regions that are lagging behind. The regions targeted by this objective are those whose per capita gross domestic product (GDP), measured in purchasing power parity, is less than 75% of the Community average.
In this context, the European Union and Italy agreed that a substantial share of the resources of the European Structural Funds was destined to support research and innovation activities in the 4 Regions of the "Convergence" Objective (Puglia, Calabria, Sicily, Campania), with the aim of making them engines of social and economic development.
• Strengthening of the observational network for climate-environmental monitoring (atmosphere, agricultural, forest, coastal, marine ecosystems) and of the data processing and storage infrastructures in the Convergence Regions.
• Strengthening and fine-tuning of infrastructures dedicated to the development of instrumented systems, of innovative sensors, of cloud computing platforms.
• Creation of a "Scientific & Technological Laboratory", for sensor development and instrumented systems.
• Inclusion of monitoring and technological development infrastructures in the course of international initiatives, projects and programs in the climate-environmental sector.
• Acquisition of measurements and information on air quality, climate system, agro-forestry and coastal ecosystems.
• Development of analysis, processing and forecasting systems integrated with the information acquired from the observation network, in order to make tools for the management of environmental problems (eg air quality, forest fires, transformations of the coastal ecosystem, saline wedge interference, wind energy production, ...).
• Training of highly qualified technical-scientific, managerial and technical-administrative personnel
