Abstract of the project
IANOS brings together two Lighthouse Islands (LH) (Terceira-PT, Ameland-NL), and three Fellow Islands (FI) (Lambedusa-IT, Bora-Bora-FR, Nisyros-GR), which share a common vision of decarbonising their energy systems and be independent of energy until 2050. Thirty-four (34) highly experienced partners from nine (9) European countries join forces to deliver smart technological, economic and social innovations, providing systemic optimization starting from an approach centered on the Energy Community. IANOS adopts an Insular Energy Transition Strategy built around three (3) Insular Energy Transition Tracks that focus on: a) Energy efficiency and grid support for extremely high RES penetration, b) Decarbonisation through electrification and support of non-emissive fuels, c) EmpoweringLocal Energy Communities (LEC).
Built around 3 Island Energy Transition Tracks (IETTs) and a community-centered energy approach;
Demonstrate the direct increase of the renewable energy mix through targeted interventions in 2 islands Terceira and Ameland and within 9 Use Cases;
Addressing the grid integration challenges, induced by RES, through the VPP on the Islands together with a "smart energy coordination" approach;
Promote innovation on Accuulo and Smart Grid technology;
Evaluate the replicability in the islands within the EU through 3 reference examples of Fellow Islands: Lampedusa, Bora Bora, Nisyros
2 Demonstrate specific technology-driven interventions, envisaged through 3 transition tracks and 9 use cases, towards the de-carbonization of the energy system in 2 LH islands, validating IANOS solutions up to TRL 8;
3 Successfully guide EU island decision makers in designing cost-effective and feasible action plans for decarbonising their energy systems
4 Fully involve EU islanders in the transition to a low-carbon economy; considering them as an active actor in the energy system
5 To ensure a high potential for replication of IANOS results, reaching a critical mass of European islands and RE stakeholders.
6 Exchange knowledge within the BRIDGE initiative working groups, while contributing to the Clean EU Islands initiative and helping to homogenize the fragmented regulation of the islands.
