Abstract of the project

The project involves the redevelopment of the building stock towards better levels of energy efficiency through the production of renewable energy and the reuse and recycling of waste deriving from major demolitions. The project responds to these needs by laying the foundations for the creation of a CER, demonstrating the possibility of implementing this system which allows to increase the production of renewable energy in the Calabrian territory, making buildings indirectly more sustainable by enjoying clean energy for the need energy and reduces the air emissions required for the production of conventional energy and demonstrates the feasibility of recycling waste resulting from the removal of asbestos cement surfaces.

The project envisages carrying out an intervention to remove an asbestos-cement surface with a new roof equipped with a photovoltaic system in order to demonstrate the possibility of creating a CER (Renewable Energy Community), a legal entity made up of public, private and companies that consume self-produced energy with plants powered by renewable sources, with the aim of providing environmental, economic or social benefits to their members and to the areas in which they operate.
The possible reuse of inerted asbestos cement within a local chain of cement factories will be evaluated through laboratory tests. At the same time, the environmental and energy benefits of a future network based on the CER in the city of Catanzaro will be evaluated.
In order to involve citizens, a communication campaign will be carried out in order to disseminate the model by making known the methods of implementation of the incentive mechanism for the removal of asbestos cement surfaces and the related environmental benefits relating to this network.
The objective of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a CER (Renewable Energy Community) by replacing asbestos-cement roofing with a photovoltaic pilot plant. Through a virtuous path, the Municipal Administration will be able to manage public and private coverage in an innovative way.
The general objectives of the project can be summarized in these points:
• Identify a procedure managed by the Municipality of Catanzaro for the creation of a CER and the simultaneous removal of asbestos cement surfaces
• Demonstrate the economic convenience of removing asbestos-cement surfaces and replacing them with photovoltaic systems
• Promote the production of energy from renewable sources
The specific objectives of the project can be summarized in these points:
• Identify the surface on which to intervene to replace the asbestos-cement roofing
• Design of an incentive system for public and private users
