The accurate mass spectrometry laboratory is equipped with a GC-MS Orbitrap mass spectrometer. The use of the GC Exactive (Orbitrap technology) allows to perform highly sensitive analyses on targeted and untargeted compounds, combining the robustness of an instrument for reliable quantitative analyses with cutting-edge processing software. The resolving power (up to 50.000 (FWHM) m/z 272), the mass precision below ppm and the detection limit <4fg TCDD allow the study of ultratrace analyses of extremely sensitive samples such as those from remote areas. The specificity of the analyses is also given by the possibility of using both the electronic and chemical ionization (EI/CI) source.

The experience of the working group allows to put specific analytical methods for different classes of pollutants. In fact, the work carried out in recent years allows to carry out preliminary screening of Unknwon compounds on different matrices and to pass in a subsequent phase to the quantitative analysis of the same. This is also possible through the development of sampling and purification methods upstream of the instrumental determination system on classes that go beyond the routine of regulated pollutants (eg Emerging Pollutants).
