The new generations are our sprouts of hope to build a sustainable future!

With these premises and with the event held on December 20, 2022 in the Primary School classes of the Aprigliano Comprehensive Institute, an awareness-raising process entitled "We are the air we breathe" was launched.

The researchers of the CNR IIA together with the company representatives RePlanet Energy, through workshops and educational videos, they introduced the issues of air pollution and good environmental practices, as required by the reference project HARMONY

A series of didactic experiments were initially carried out, aimed at making people understand the physical properties of air and its different behavior with respect to the solid and liquid states of matter. We then moved on to the general description of the chemical composition of the atmosphere by introducing the main atmospheric pollutants and climate-altering gases in the form of "little monsters" harmful to both human health and that of our planet. In both cases the children were directly involved, who showed curiosity and enthusiasm in experimenting with the support material for the proposed physics experiments, as well as with the colored plasticine, which was provided to them to reproduce the molecules of the main atmospheric pollutants .

Finally, attention was paid to the fundamental role played by trees, our special "allies" in the fight against atmospheric pollution, the climate crisis and the protection of the territory in general. To underline the importance of taking care of our environment, on which the quality of the air we breathe also depends, a moment has also been set up dedicated to the sowing of downy oak (Quercus pubescens) acorns present in the botanical garden of theUniversity of Calabria.

In fact, each child was given a recycled and personalized jar for the occasion, in which a downy oak acorn was placed together with the soil, with the task of dedicating it the necessary care to ensure its growth up to the formation of a real tree. The day of didactic activity then concluded with the planting of a young downy oak tree, also donated by the botanical garden of the University of Calabria, in the school courtyard as a sign of commitment to environmental sustainability.

The final moment of this first informative event was celebrated in the presence of the Headmaster, Dr. Immacolata Cairo, and the Vice-Principal Dr. Iolanda Maccarrone. We were also honored by the participation of the Mayor of Aprigliano, Alessandro Porco, the Councilor Francesco Tarantino together with other representatives of the Town Council of Aprigliano, as well as the contact person of the Civil Protection of Aprigliano – Mr. Andrea Talarico.

Let's sow sprouts of hope together!
