NATURALISTIC WALK

Ecosystem monitoring from remote systems and field validation in Gravina in Puglia

Bosco Difesa Grande | Sunday 23 October 2022 | hours: 10:00 - 13:30

The scientific trek took place from 11:00 to 13:30 on a ring route of about 4 km in the Bosco Difesa Grande, starting from its picnic area. The participation was numerous, of about 40 participants including some children. The walk was very pleasant, given the optimal weather conditions.

Initially, CO2 measurements were made with the available field instrumentation (accumulation chamber), providing participants, in a simplified way, with information regarding photosynthesis and plant respiration. At various points along the route, the activities of the researchers of the IIA-CNR Earth Observation Group of Bari, the type of satellite data used and the related products developed were described. Some of these products, such as LCLU (Land Cover Land Use) maps, were shown to participants with app (qfield) installed on smartphones and tablets. During the walk the various ecosystems of interest (the semi-natural prairie, the oak wood), were recognized and described with particular reference to their importance and also vulnerability (due to pressure and threat factors). The habitat 3170 *, temporary Mediterranean ponds, has not been identified due to the scarcity of rains that have occurred on the site in recent months (also determined by the ongoing climate changes).
